During the international confer ences held in London in 1831, the European powers made arrange ments for the independent existence of Belgium, which had seceded from the Kingdom of the Netherlands after the Belgian Revolt of August 1830. King William I did not accept the second “treaty” (of 24 Articles) until March 1838. In April 1839, the Netherlands recog nized Belgium as an independent neighbor state.
